Ramblings about development of games for iPhone

You might wonder about the quality of the games for iPhone. It's not even strange to see that iPhone comes without pre-installed games. Most of the recent phones come with games... Just remember Nokia 3310 with the legendary Snake game.

The game was addictive and I remember playing it non-stop. I'm really interested why didn't Apple include something similar. They have great designers, programmers and marketing geniuses. They should know that we want to use our phone for something more than just calling and browsing on internet.

We want to have fun... Well at least I do... Do you?

What would Nokia be without The Snake?

Just imagine what are the possibilities of the iPhone interface. They are literally unlimited. Some users are already making concepts about how could the interface be used. And how could the games of the future be an amazing gaming experience for iPhone owners.

There is a video on youtube about how could games like Need For Speed be ported to iPhone and how could the touch screen be used in the most effective way. Most games just display buttons on the screen as if iPhone had generic buttons as other phones have.

But I don't see logic in that... Just think about it. IPhone was designed to be without buttons so that it would be easier to operate with it. But now there are developers making games that use half of the screen and the lower half is full of graphics that represent buttons.

Now there are some games that use full capabilities of the iPhone. But there is a rule in this universe... If you want something of value, you have to give something of value for exchange. So most of the sites that provide the best games with the best graphics are charging some money for the service. And I think it's reasonable that they do.

Because there is a logic behind the prices. The better the game, the higher the development price because the more competent programmers must work on it.

Well, here is a site where it's perfectly described how to get the best iPhone games: http://www.iphonedoom.co.cc/

Taptap, tetris and more!

You might be wondering how do games on iPhone even look! Isn't that absurd? Who would have thought that you can get a new phone with no pre-existing games installed on it...

Well take a peek at this video.... You might find yourself interested in even better games with even better graphics...

Do you want to play air hockey

With every day there are more and more games that take full advantages of the technological possibilities the iPhone has to offer.

One of these games is Air Hockey and it's obvious on the picture that the game is pretty stylish.

Allegedly it runs smooth and is a great gaming experience. The only problem that players report is the requirement to have fingers always on the screen.

Well I hope that they'll fix that.

NES Mod for iPhone... Do you want to play Mario?

This is yet another great article about how can old Nintendo games be emulated on iPhone... It was written by Erik Michaels:

--------------------

Ever since the iPhone was officially launched and everyone discovered the amazing capabilities of the system, there has been some eager anticipation for when those wonderful third parties would start coming up with ways to play games on the iPhone. Well, today your prayers have been answered, although I must admit that it's not perfect yet by any means.

A third-party programmer has come up with an emulator for your iPhone that allows you to play a variety of games from the original Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). That's right, the system that brought you the glorious start of the Super Mario Bros.

The list of games available on this "pocket NES" is so far fairly sturdy, offering such classic titles as Super Mario Bros., the Legend of Zelda, Metroid, and Mega Man 2...and that's just the start.

Now, bear in mind that the process for getting this all set up isn't exactly easy, and even if you do manage to get it set up right, there are still some bugs. This is a brand new emulator for a brand new "console," so it's bound to be imperfect at this early stage. However, updates are happening regularly, and I've heard that the Legend of Zelda ROM is almost to the level of the original cult classic.

Also, to do all this you'll have to crack your iPhone with a program such as Jailbreak...which isn't something Apple condones or supports, and it could very well void your warranty with them. As of yet I don't think it's illegal, but it's definitely not encouraged by the company. Do it at your own risk.

But, if you're willing to take the risk, you could have Mario bouncing around those tunnels right on your iPhone. The interface is a little sluggish right now, but it's a beauty of a representation of the original. The touch screen system of the iPhone allows for a fully-functional and accurate version of the original NES controller. Once the kinks and bugs get all worked out, this could become pretty popular.

So if you think it's worth the risk to try to get this all fixed up so that you can show off to your friends that you have Link on your iPhone, you can check out http://www.everythingicafe.com/forum/iphone-software/nes-for-the-iphone-yes-a-real-3rd-party-app-8160-11.html They have a pretty step-by-step guide for getting it all fixed up, although it's a little chaotic, being an "impromptu walkthrough."

---------------------------

I dug around for a bit and found a better walkthrough that isn't as chaotic as the one provided in the article... Here it is: http://code.google.com/p/iphonenes/

The only problem is that you will have to find ROMs (the actual games) by yourself...
